Thomas Montgomery Newman was born in 1955, in Los Angeles, California. He is well known for his contributions to film and television music. Throughout his career, he achieved many prestigious prizes for his talents which include Emmy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globes, Academy Awards and Grammy Awards.
Newman studied orchestration and music composition at University of Southern California and Yale University. He could achieve both Honors and Master’s degrees in Music. During his study at Yele University, he met composer Stephen Sondheim, who became Newman’s mentor.
Newman was in love with musical theater than film music. He began his career working with Sondheim in Broadway plays. He met Lionel and got his first film composition assignment for “The Paper Chase”. Later, Lionel’s friend John Williams found Newman to be great and gave him opportunity to compose for “Star Wars Episode VI”. After that Newman started getting numerous works such as “Reckless (1984), “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994), “Unstrung Heroes” (1996), “The Horse Whisperer” (1998) and “American Beauty” (1999). In the meantime, Newman had achieved many prizes and awards including Grammy and a BAFTA.
He became one of the major music composers for films and television by 2000. He became a commercially successful composer. His later works include The Green Mile, , In the Bedroom, to Frida, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Good German and many more.
His recent works include Get on Up and The Judge. Newman loves simple to complex musical structures. He works with many types of musical sounds including orchestra. Sometimes he proffered percussion-only music for some of his works. He also loves to include some rare musical instrument like hammered dulcimer, psaltery, hurdy-gurdy and zither. Newman always loves to experiment with music. Most of his works are well accepted by all film music critics.
Newman and his wife got three children. They are currently living in Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles.
