About The Strokes

In 1998, the American rock band “The Strokes” was formed in New York City. The group is composed of the lead vocalist Julian Casablancas, guitarists and back-up vocalists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond, Jr., bass guitarist Nikolai Fraiture and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. The band produced Indie Rock, Garage Rock and Post-punk Revival type of music.

The band started when Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi and Fab Moretti played together when they are studying at Dwight School, Manhattan. Nikolai Fraiture was Julian’s friend studying in Lycee Francais de New York. Then when Julian went to Switzerland to study, he met Albert Hammond, Jr. When Julian went back to New York and have Albert as his roommate, they started playing at different clubs, like The Spiral, Luna Lounge and Mercury Lounge. Ryan Gentles worked as a Booker in Mercury Lounge. Ryan later resigned and became The Stroke’s manager.

The band rehearsed songs and recorded their demo. They sent their demo to UK’s Rough Trade Records. They got the recording company’s attention and released the band’s first extended Play “The Modern Age”. In 2001, August, the band made their first outward show. In October, The Strokes released their debut album “Is This It”. The band received great compliments from their listeners. The album was included in “500 Greatest Album of All Time” by Rolling Stone. They reached the 8th spot in “100 Best Debut Album of All Time” and 2nd place in “100 Best Albums of the 2000s”.

The band produced fans from New York City to European countries, Canada, Brazil, up to Australia. Due to September 11 incident, one of the album single, “New York City Cops” was substituted with “When It Started”. In 2002, the band performed at UK’s festival, Carling Weekend, and at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

In 2003, the band had a tour in Japan, playing their upcoming songs. They released their second album “Room of Fire”. In 2006, “First Impressions of Earth” album was released. In 2011, their fourth album “Angles” was released. In 2010, less than a decade after, their debut album “Is This It” was able to sell over three million and five hundred thousand copies all over the world. In 2013, their fifth album “Comedown Machine” was released, which sold over five million albums. The band was able to win one award each in these awarding bodies, Brit Awards, Meteor Music Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards.
