About The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins , an American rock band, was formed in 1988. This band was formed by the band’s vocalist and lead guitarist Billy Corgan and James Iha who plays rhythm guitars. Billy Corgan was brought up in Chicago who later on moved to Florida. When he was 19, he initiated to form a band going back to his home. He started working at a record store and formed the band meeting with James Iha. The duo gets D'arcy Wretzky for bass and Jimmy Chamberlin for drums.

The first single “I am One” led the band to success as it could make a contract with indie super-label Sub Pop. In 1991, the band released “Gish”. And in 1993, it released “Siamese Dream”. This album was one of the best selling albums at that time selling more than 4 million copies.

Both Corgan and Jimmy wanted to go away from the traditional punk or grunge and create alternative/progressive rock. The band became popular in many places and recorded albums on regular basis. “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” was released in 1995 which proved to be quite successful.

In 1996, Jonathan Melvoin (keyboardist) and Chamberlin took too much heroin which led Melvoin to death. Chamberlin was arrested and the band fired him. Filter's Matt Walker joined the band as a substitute of Chamberlin. In 1998, the band produced “Adore”. In this album the band used percussionists and drum machines. But unfortunately this album was a failure.

Chamberlin again joined the band in 1999 and “MACHINA” was produced. This new album was considered better than “Adore”. But the band did not want to go on and finally it broke in 2000. In May 2007, the band got a reunion with Corgan and Chamberlin, bassist Jeff Schroder and Ginger Reyes. Some of the band’s former member did not come because of their internal problems.

The band was a solid rock band and achieved a number of recognitions and prizes. This band is considered as important as Nirvana as both of them were from the same period of time and both have many interactions indirectly.
