Formed in the late 2000s, the Lumineers are an American folk band from Denver, Colorado. Their classic Americana sound stems from the dissented 1960s musical era. Similar acts include Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, Humphrey’s McGee, and The John Butler Trio.
In 2005, Westley Shultz and Jeremiah Fraites began writing and recording music together in New York. The pair spent three years performing before adding drummer, Jay Van Dyke. Afterwards, the group moved to New Jersey and then Manhattan in pursuit of a music career. The trio got tired of the high rent and a cutthroat scene and decided to take their band to Denver.
Once in Colorado, the band added Cellist Neyla Pekarek and began performing in local clubs and coffee shops. After a year together, they began to branch out and tour. This continued for 3 years under the management of Katelyn Arnold until she introduced them to their new representation, Onto Entertainment. Reps, Christene Green and David Meinert listened to the band on YouTube and asked them to record an album.
In 2011, the Lumineers headed to Seattle, Washington, to record their debut album. The same year, before the release, the group allowed their first single, “Ho Hey” to air on a Seattle radio station. The next year, the band dropped their first full-length self-titled album. The record released under Dualtone Records and “Ho Hey” became a worldwide success. It reached No. 2 on Billboard music charts. Spodify announced that it became the No. 1 song downloaded in Manhatten and the third most in Brooklyn. Their 2013 tour sold out at many locations including Manhatten, where the group began. Since, the Lumineers received 2 Grammy nominations and released their Deluxe Edition, containing 5 bonus songs that didn’t make the debut album. The single “Scotland” is the opening song for the new television series Reign. As of 2014, the group is currently preparing for their upcoming South American Tour. There are no current announcements of upcoming albums.
