The Flaming Lips is a neo-psychedelic rock band from Oklahoma. Formed in 1983, the band now consists of Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins, Steven Drozd and Kliph Scurlock. Black ground, oil pumps, acid-blue sky mixed weirdly in one music video – that’s what the Flaming Lips is like. Due to their outstanding image and art, in 2006, a street in their hometown Oklahoma was named after the band.
Although the style of the group is more indie, the Flaming Lips’ music is more than that. Vibrant and multilayered chords, crazy lyrics and funny song names make it all very special. The Flaming Lips concerts are usually a mix of animal tricks, puppet shows and complicated light performance.
The bizarre name of the band appeared after the first vocalist Mark Coyen had a dream. He saw Virgin Mary flying up to him while he was sitting at the back seat of a car. She covered his face with flaming kisses as a blessing. After that, Coyen borrowed the first instruments from the local church and started a group. The artista came and went, learning to play on the Batman theme, shocking the people in clubs and trying to combine the uncombineable. The first full-size album Hear It Is was not as acid as the following Oh My Gawd and Telepathic Surgery. The band started turning their Flaming Lips concerts into freak shows, purchased two smoke machines and traveled by a van to Buffalo where they met active promoters to introduce themselves to local college students.
The first conceptual album In A Priest Driven Ambulance features the significant changed artists. Wayne Coyne now was a vocalist, one more guitarist came and a drummer changed. The band were having high expectations regarding the album as their label was about to stop and they needed a new record company. After the performance at which pyrotechnic effects caused a stage fire, a major label manager got interested in the group.
The final transformation from a weird cocoon into an acid butterfly happened in 1996. Coyne’s Avantgarde experiments resulted in a Zaireeka – four CDs for simultaneous play. Five more albums followed since then and that is not all. The Flaming Lips are making a movie about Christmas on Mars starring the band members.
Wayne Coyne once claimed that if they lived two centuries ago, they would become pirates, jump on a ship and sail to the end of the world picking up all the freaks on their way.
