About The Cat Empire

The Cat Empire is a 6-man musical band that originated from Melbourne, Australia and first came together in 1999.The six members making the band are Felix Riebl, Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwhala, Harry James Angus, Will Hull-Brown, Ollie McGill and Ryan Monro. The band’s music has no definite genre, with their songs having elements of jazz, reggae, funk, hip hop and Latin.Nonetheless, their music is intended to make the listeners move and dance naturally.

The band started when Riebl, McGill and Monro were called by Jazz Cat, a 9-man band led by Steve Sedergeen in the later part of 1999.The trio started playing together and the name of the band was inspired by a drawing of Riebl’s brother. The Cat Empire was soon seen playing in gigs and live shows in different clubs around Melbourne. In 2001, the band was completed upon the addition of Jumps, Angus and Brown.

Following their performances in numerous music festivals, the band recorded and released their self-entitled debut album in 2003.In October 2003, the carrier single of the album entitled “Hello” was first aired on the radios and received successful support from Australian listeners.By December 2003, the album has reached the Gold status after selling more than 35,000 copies nationwide, and by March 2005, it reached the double platinum status.

In April 2005, the band released their second album entitled Two Shoes and has immediately attained the platinum recording status on the following month. The lead single “Sly” peaked at the number 2 spot in Australia’s Net 50 Chart, and the band performed in tour dates spanning from March to April 2005 to promote their second album. In November, the band played in a sold-out tour labeled The Night That Never End Tour.

The Cat Empire was also invited to play in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March.A month after, the band released Cities: The Cat Empire Project, their third successful album which gave the band an award from the World Music Aria Award later in October. So Many Nights, the fourth installment of the band was first offered in 2007 which spawned the hit singles “So Many Nights” and “No Longer There”. Cinema and Steal the Light, their fifth and six albums, respectively, completes the list of the hit releases of The Cat Empire. To reach out further to their followers, the band played in numerous tours reaching fans all over the world including Japan, US, Canada and Europe.
