Sylvan Esso is close to such genres as folk pop, indie pop, electro and folk. The sound of the duo is a combination of Amelia’s voice with Nick’s electronic beats an sound engineering. The songs are drenched with sweet synthetic sounds, bright xylophone chords and dance rhythms.
The tandem Sylvan Esso was formed in 2013 by the vocalist Amelia Meath and producer and instrumentalist Nick Sanborn from psychedelic folk band Megafaun.
The duo debuted with their single Hey Mami and then issued the first studio album in 2014. The CD was quite successful, and since then the band presented two more singles and went touring around the world.
Amelia Meath, the vocalist, was part of a trio when she met Nick Sanborn in the Cactus club. He was giving his solo concert there. She asked him to interpret her Play It Right in his manner, and he agreed.
The song went so well that at their next meeting, Amelia and Nick told each other how much they like to work with each other and decided to make something more pop together. So, in 2012-2013, Amelia and Nick created their own project. After Meath came back from her tour, that lasted 36 months, she started to look for a place to settle. This led her to Durham, where Nick lived at that time, and the work on the new project started. At first, the songs were recorded in Nick’s bedroom.
Sanborn said that his music combined so easily with Amelia’s melodies, and just mere words and beats were making ready-to-listen singles at once. The first self-named album got the seventh position in Independent Albums chart. That was a success. The duo first appeared on TVin 2014 with their Coffee, which brought them even more popularity.
The Sylvan Esso’s melodies are diverse ranging from sullen and gloomy to cheerful and energetic with deep hypnotic beat. In Nick’s traditional structures and vocal harmony of folk mix with aerial and vivid electronic. The lyrics are non the less different. Meath is singing about soul tearing love, and her next song is about a sexual harassment victim. She claims that the songs are made diverse like this to reach more audience. She is also trying to use her voice as an instrument, which makes chord and lyrics indivisible.
Sylvan Esso tour is on now. The tour dates are from the 4 of August 2017 till the 14 of November with a few more additional concerts on 2-6 of March 2018 in Dominican Republic. Sylvan Esso concerts will take place in Ireland, UK, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Canada and the USA.
