Formed in 1994, Smash Mouth is a pop-rock band from San Jose, California. Similar acts include The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Singer Steve Harwell started the group after rapping in a local hip-hop ensemble. He and his manager Kevin Coleman recruited bassist Paul De Lisle and guitarist Greg Camp. During the early years, Coleman provided the drums. The quartet released their first demo “Nervous in the Alley” to local radio stations gaining the attention of Interscope Records. Afterwards, the group inked a deal with the major label and went to work on their first album.
In 1997, Fush Yu Mang dropped garnering them extreme mainstream success. Smash Mouth sold over 2 million copies of their debut album. The single “Walking on the Sun” became their most popular song receiving radio play on all pop stations. The hit also made a respectable appearance on the Billboard charts.
Two years later, Smash Mouth dropped their follow-up record, Astro Lounge. The highly anticipated album sold over 3 million records gaining more commercial success for the band. It featured their popular song “All Star.” The single became a hit for all ages and featured on several films including, Rat Race. The band also made their movie debut in the same film. The next year, the group featured songs from past generations including The Monkey’s “I’m a Believer.”
Smash Mouth spent the next 3 years writing and releasing 2 albums, Smash Mouth and Get the Picture?. The records failed to meet standards and their label released them before their fourth album. In 2005, they signed with Universal Records and dropped their first greatest hits album, which included bonus tracks that didn’t make previous cuts.
Later, the group tried to release another record that year; yet, things never transpired. In 2006, drummer Jason Sutter replaced Micheal Urbano and Smash Mouth dropped Summer Girl. The album sounded more like their first and garnered modest success. Afterwards the group went through several member changes and temporary replacements. In 2012, they dropped their sixth album, Magic under their new label. One year later, the band went on tour promoting the record, performing on the AutoNation tour in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Smash Mouth is currently on a US summer tour.
