About Skepta

Skepta is the popular stage name of Joseph Junior Adenuga, a rapper, songwriter and grime artist. He was born on September 19, 1982 and grew up in Tottenham, North London, England, although he traced his roots originally from Nigeria. The name skepta was derived from the English word scepter, a wand that is associated with magician; although he tweaked the spelling for uniqueness as he included it into his uploads in YouTube.

On his early years, Skepta was a regular competitor in various MC battles and at one time beat more than 300 participants in a single contest.Because of his experiences in MC battles, most of his songs have the influenced of grime music. After Skepta began doing rap song, in the later part of 2005, he teamed up with his brother JME and founded their own record label, Boy Better Know.Later in 2007, he released his first album entitled Greatest Hits under the Boy Better Know label.Among the singles included in the album are “Listen Up”, “In a Corner” and “Blood, Sweat and Tears”.

Two years after, his succeeding album Microphone Champion was completed and made available in June 2009.Likewise, the album was released under the BBK label. The carrier single “Rolex Sweep” gained moderate success, entering the UK Singles Hit Chart and peaking at the number 86 spot. The album also contained the tracks “Too Many Man” and “Sunglasses at Night”, which also reached the UK Singles Chart at different positions.

His third album, Doin’ It Again, was his first album recorded and released under a major label, the All Around the World Records to which he signed with in 2010.Probably the most successful album of Skepta by far, it produced three singles that eventually reach the top 40 in the UK Singles Chart in the same year. These are “Rescue Me” being the highest ranking peaking at number 14, “Bad Boy” reaching the number 26 spot, and “Cross My Heart” topping at number 31.During the same year, Skepta performed in the UK concert tours of fellow English rapper, Chipmunk. Personally managing their record label, Skepta, together with JME, has helped many fellow artists in releasing their own music.Among these artists are Wiley, who has recorded five mixtapes and released an album in 2006, and Shorty who came up with two mixtapes in 2010 and 2011.
