Born in 1987, Jeff Montalvo (Seven Lions) is a music producer from Santa Barbara, California. Although his style is dubstep, Montalvo’s influences spawn from the metal genre. He claims Viking Metal, Opeth, and Storm Corrosion is his favorite bands. Similar acts include Singularity, Xilent, Adventure Club, and Rameses B.
Montalvo started playing music at a young age. At first, he enjoyed playing drums but they were loud and disruptive to neighbors. He joined a metal band to pursue his music dreams; yet, he found it hard to rely on others. Overtime, he departed from the percussion instruments and began playing with his dad’s computer. After receiving a music program from a friend, Montalvo started creating music and recording samples.
In 2011, Seven Lions created a remix of “You Got To Go.” The song became a dance club hit and put Montalvo on the map. He followed by releasing another EP in 2012 titled, Polarize. It featured several songs that captured the attention of fans and critics. Four of his singles topped charts throughout Europe and received praise from Zan Lowe. Lowe stated the album was one of the hottest records on the planet. Afterwards, Seven Lion’s management team hooked up with Skrillex and introduced the artist. Skrillex was impressed by his work and began a new project with Montalvo.
In October, their collaboration, Days to Come released and reached the No. 2 spot on ITunes music charts. Seven Lions began to increase his following and receive support from popular DJs Above and Beyond and Gareth Emery. He followed the release by appearing in several major music festivals including Electric Daisy Carnival in New York and Camp Bisco. Seven Lions continued the 2013 year supporting acts Porter Robinson and SXSW.
One year later, Montalvo dropped his next EP, Worlds Apart. He also announced his 2014 World Apart Tour would follow. Seven Lions departed his original sound for the record and began experimenting. The record featured collaborations with many popular artists including Ella Goulding and Tove Lo. Upon its release, it received both critical and commercial acclaim. Seven Lions is currently touring in support of his new album. He is making notable stops in Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia.
