Robert Peter Maximilian Williams was born in Stock-on-Trent, Staffordshire in UK. His father used to be a comedian and later opened a pub. His mother was a florist. When Robert was three, his parents divorced and he stayed with his mother and stepsister Sally. Robbie went to school in Mill Hill, but was not an eager pupil. Although he had a prominent artistic talent, sang and danced well. He always took part in school performances, plays and musicals where he took the leading roles. Besides, he was a school football team player. After graduation in 1990, Williams decided to follow his mother’s advice and try entering show business. He came to the casting for Take That and got through becoming the fifth band member.
The following five years Robbie Williams was a part in the boys’ band Take That, that was mostly singing the covers for popular bands’ songs. At first they were playing in local clubs and schools. Then the group started gaining popularity and in 1991 released the first album which topped the British charts and became second best seller in UK. Two years later, they signed a contract with BMG.
In 1994, Take That went on tour which ended in 1995 only. Having come back, they began their third album. This was the time when the disagreement appeared, and it was started by Williams. He was not satisfied with the image of a «good boy» and wanted to stand out which was not welcomed by the band leader Gary Barlow. In summer 1995, Robbie Williams left the band. After that, the group broke having released just one more Greatest Hits album.
Williams wanted to build his solo career, but the contract with BMG was an obstacle as it didn’t let him release his own singles if he leaves Take That. He had a half a year trial with the company all this time leading riotous lifestyle with alcohol and drugs.
In 1996, Williams finally signs a contract with another label and releases his first single followed by a full album. But the real fame came with his song Angels in 1997 that topped the UK charts. After that, his popularity wind up resulting in awards of all sorts, new releases and does with Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman. In 2004, Robbie Williams’s Greatest Hits is sold in 8 million copies. The same year, his friend writes Williams’s biography titled Feel.
