About Pretty Lights

Born in 1981, Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights) is an American electronic smash artist from Fort Collins, Colorado. His music resembles Bassnector and Supervision, which is a new form of automated dance music. Pretty Lights sound is a mixture of samples and original recordings pressed to vinyl and mixed on an iMac.

Smith became interested in music at a young age becoming involved in the local Hip-Hop scene. After high school, he attended Boulder University but dropped out to pursue his music career. Soon, Pretty Lights began opening for hit acts STS9, The Disco Bisquits, and Widespread Panic. His popularity grew with the genre leading Smith to venture out beyond Colorado. In 2008, Pretty Lights made it as far as Austin, Texas and started to move farther east. In December, he appeared in Fayetteville, Arkansas and drove the town with fans following along. He concluded the trip throughout the community by performing at The Gypsy.

In 2009, Pretty lights went on a tour performing at Bonarroo, Rothbury, and returned to Arkansas to play Wakarusa. His live shows became successful for an artist with no album released. In 2010, he continued his festival touring to play at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Nocturnal Festival in Apache Pass, Evolve Festival in Nova Scotia, and many more. One year later, Pretty Lights went back on the festival circuit, performing at Electric Forest and Camp Disco.

In 2011, the artist dropped his first two albums on his own record label, Pretty Lights Music. The records did well for an electronic artist, due to the free releases. Smith received praise for giving music away for free, to the dislike of most record labels. His generosity achieved appreciation by fans and represents a new generation of musicians. In 2012, Pretty lights collaborated with Lean Rimes and Ralph Stanley on a country/electronic project titled, “Wayfaring Stranger.” The next year, Pretty Lights released his first album without other artist’s music. A Color Map of The Sun became an instant success gaining one Grammy nomination. At the end of 2013, Pretty Lights remixed the album and re-released it. He is currently on a worldwide tour including stops in the US and Spain.
