About Nelly Furtado
Nelly Kim Furtado is a famous Canadian singer/songwriter/actress that was born on December 2, 1978 in British Columbia, Canada by Antonio Jose Furtado and Maria Manuela Furtado with 2 siblings. In his younger years, she start playing instruments like Ukulele and trombone and later on, she learned guitar and keyboard. Before turning into teenager, she starts writing a song with his own and when she became adolescent she was a part of Portuguese marching band.
In the beginning of her career, she met Tallis Newkirk when she visited her sister in Toronto. Tallis is a member of “Plains of Fascination” and Tallis ask Nelly to became part of their album “Join the Ranks” in year 1996. She was contributed in the song “Waitin’ 4 The Streets”. Nelly and Newkirk formed “Nelstar” but it was not successful for her so she separated her ways to the group.
Nelly performed in Hone Jam shows were she discovered by Gerald Eaton (The Philosopher King) and asked her to worked with him. Together with Biran West, they helped Nelly to release her first single “Party’s Hust Begun (Again)” that came out in Brokedown Palace: Music from the Original Motion Pictures Soundtrack in collaboration with many people including Chris Taylor who introduced her to Dreamworks Records, Beth Halper (A&R Executive), Garbage Drummer and Butch Vig (Record producer).
She released her debut album “Whoa, Nelly!” on October 24, 2000 that reached number 22 in Billboard 200 Chart. The single “Party’s Just begun (Again)” was included on 1999 film “Brokedown Palace” later on they released a remix version of it called “Party”.
In the year 2003, she released her 2nd album “Folklore” on November 25 by Dreamworks Records. Her single “Forca” was the official anthem of 2004 European Football Championship. In this album she collaborated with Caetano Veloso and Javis Church. Followed by 3rd album on June 20, 2006 by Geffen Records produced by Timbaland ann Danja. It was sold for 12 million copies that became best-selling album for the year 2006-2007 and it was Certified Platinum by RIAA.
Nelly launched her 4th album “Mi Plan” on September 11, 2009 by Nelstar Entertainment and Universal Latino that became Certified Platinum. “The Spirit Indestructible” was her 5th album that was introduced on September 2012; she was collaborated with Kenyan Boys Choir in one of her single when she visited Kenya, Tiesto for the remixed version.
She won numerous award including Top Pop 100 song in 2006 (Billboard Music Awards), Best Canadian Artist (2012), Radio Eska Award (2013) and Best Excellence in the Arts (2013). In addition to that she received plenty of awards in the prominent Grammy Awards including the nominations.
