Missy Elliot was born on July 1, 1971 in Portsmouth, Virginia.She is an international icon and a well-decorated singer, songwriter and producer.Her success as a rapper was unparalleled during her time, winning five Grammy awards, releasing multiple platinum recording-statuses albums and spawning several hit singles including “She’s a Bitch” and “Gossip Folks”, among others.
The Making of a Multi-talented Star
Missy started her journey in the music industry as a member of a singing group named Sista. The record label Swing Mob, owned by Devante Swing, approached and signed the group in 1991.However, Swing Mob closed and together with it the dream of releasing an album for the group.In 1996, Missy, together with his friend Timbaland, started their songwriting career and completed nine tracks for the album One in a Million, Aaliyah’s sophomore album.It was a big success and spawned the hit singles "If Your Girl Only Knew", "One in a Million" and "Hot Like Fire", three of the songs co-written by the duo.
Following the success of the album, Missy and Timbaland continued to write songs for various artists, but in 1996, Missy decided to take another step in her music career and signed with Elektra Entertainment.In 1997, Missy released her first album Supa Dupa Fly and her carrier single “The Rain” propelled the album’s sales and later reached platinum status.The album also received a nomination for the Rap Album of the Year in the Grammy Awards ’98.
Da Real World, Missy’s second album followed in 1999 and though pressure is lingering around after the huge success of Supa Dupa Fly, Missy proved again how she was a certified hitmaker after remix songs “Hot Boyz” and “She’s a Bitch” became instantly popular.From 1998 to 2000, Missy did extensive tours and live shows across the globe that includes the Lilith Fair (1998) and Rainbow World Tour (2000).
The third installment of Missy entitled Miss E… So Addictive was completed and first released in 2001.And just like the previous two albums, produced hit singles like “One Minute Man” and “Get Ur Freak On”.Under Construction (2002), her fourth album is considered as the best selling rap album of a female artist after it sold over 2 million copies.It was also nominated for two Grammy awards in 2003.
This is Not a Test (2003) was the fifth album of Missy, but its success was considered modest compared to her previous releases.Nonetheless, the album also reached the platinum status after selling almost 700,000 copies nationwide.
Her sixth album, The Cookbook, released in July 2005, reached the top 2 spot in the US Hit Chart and received the Gold status award later that year.
