Michael Kiwanuka is a British soul singer, composer of his own songs and guitar player. Kiwanuka’s family used to be refugees from Uganda, but the artist was born and raised in London outskirts, Maswell-Hill. At school, he got inspired by the bands like Radiohead, Offspring, Blur, Nirvana and got his first experience playing in school rock bands. Later on, he moved to Hackny at the age of 16. Soon he started to write his own songs for other artists but finally ended up singing them himself.
Kiwanuka started to study jazz in the University of Westminster and continued his studies and playing covers until Otis Redding’s Sittin’ On inspired him to change his style completely. He admits that in this period, he was influenced by Bill Withers, Pops Staples, Bob Dylan and other artists singing soul and blues, folk-rock and gospel. He is also known for using the elements of so-called «slave music» – chorus singing accompanied by handclaps only the followed by the orchestra. This surely is connected with his family’s background and gives his compositions a certain folk and even exotic scent. This can be heard in his Black Man in a White World.
Michael Kiwanuka used to play as a session guitarist for James Gadson and Tinie Tempah but later started to perform on his own in London clubs where he was finally noticed by Paul Butler from The Bees. Butler got excited with the young talented artist and invited him to his studio.
In 2011, Kiwanuka signed a deal with the Community records and released two EPs: Tell Me a Tale and I’m Getting Ready. After that, he was invited to sing as a backing artist for Adele during her UK tour. The same year brought him the third position in Brits Critics Choice and the status of the best young artist of 2011. Besides, Kiwanuka was called the most promising artist of 2012 by the BBC Sound.Michael Kiwanuka tour 2017
