About Metric

Metric is a rock band that was formed on 1998 in Toronto, Canada. The band was composed by Emily Haines (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica, synthesizer, tambourine), Joules Scott-Key (drums and percussion), James Shaw (Guitar, backing vocals, synthesizer), Joshua Winstead (Bass, backing vocals, synthesizer). The band’s name is from the program that Jimmy installed in his keyboard; that was called “Metric”. The band produced demo tape that discovered by many great labels including Warner Bros Records, Chrysalis Records, and Restless Records with the helping hand of producer Stephen Hague. Eventually, they signed a recording contract with them and start their journey.

Their first project was “Mainstream EP” that was released on the year 1998 by Chrysalis comprises of 5 tracks including “Butcher”, “The People” and “The Lifestyle”. Followed by their 2nd EP “Static Anonymity” on 2001 through Restless Records and produced by Jimmy Shaw.

2 years later, they launched their debut album on 2nd of September via Ever loving/Enjoy Records along with Last Gang Records (Canada) called “Old World Underground Where Are You Now?” that produced by Michael Andrews. They were collaborated with Edson Miller for mixing, Joe Gastwirt in mastering and Josh Hassin in cover designs. The band was nominated in Juno Awards 2006 for Alternative Album of the Year for their 2nd album entitled “Live It Out” that was introduced on September 27, 2005 through Last Gang Records. It was also included as shortlisted in the 2006 Polaris Music Prize and had been chosen in Amazon’s.com Top 100 Editor’s Pick. It was ranked at number 37 in US Billboard Top Heat seekers and number 44 in US Billboard Independent Albums.

In the year 2007, they came up with their 3rd album “Grow Up and Blow Away” which was their first recorded album in 2001 but it was released on June 26, 2007. It comprises of 10 tracks including the “London Halflife” from Static Anonymity EP and “Soft Rock Start” featuring Jimmy and Joe Mix which was written and composed by Emily and James. Unfortunately the tracks “Torture me”, “Fanfare” and “Parkdale” was not released due to unknown reason.

In addition, they also released two more albums called “Fantasies” (2009) which they won the Favorite New Album and NXNE Favorite New Indie Release by CASBY Awards and “Synthetica” in 2012 that won also as NXNE Favorite New Indie Release by CASBY Awards as well as Alternative Album of the year in 2013 and Recording Package of the year in the year 2013. Metric held lots of performances including in Virgin Festival, Leeds Festival, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Late Show with David Letterman and most specially in around the world such as North & South America, Europe, Philippines, Japan and Australia.
