About Metallica

It is considered that the history of Metallica has begun in Denmark. This country is the homeland for Lars Ulrich – the drummer and one of the band founders. From the early childhood, he was fond of tennis and did quite well being the champion of Copenhagen and getting ready for a professional sportsman’s career. All his plans were ruined when he first heard the legendary Deep Purple. From then on, all his dreams were about music only.

Lars’s parents were hoping that he would continue his tennis practice and moved to the USA. But the son abandoned the racket for the drumsticks. One day he read an advertisement in a local newspaper written by James Hetfield. The ad said that a new band is being created. Ulrich called Hetfield and this is how Metallica started.

The name was born spontaneously. Lars’s friend had an idea of a rock music magazine, but he had doubts on which name to chose: Metallica or Metal Mania. Ulrich told him that the readers would love none and took one of the names for his band. Soon the first single was ready, and the friends found a producer to help them. The lineup was changing a few times till they found a bassist Cliff Burton and a guitarist Kirk Hammett. Burton agreed to join only of the group moves to San Francisco which they did soon.

Metallica did not stay in San Francisco for long and after a short time they shifted to New York where they signed their first contract. In 1983, Metallica released their first album Kill ‘Em All. It was not a bestseller, but still gave them a good start. The popularity stroke in 1984 with their second album that already contained a few legendary hits.

In 1986, a tour bus with all the band members got in a accident. Cliff Burton died in it. The other musicians did not know whether to continue without him or not, but after getting the late bassist’s parents’ agreement, they went on. Jason Newsted replaced him and the And Justice for All was recorded with him. From that time, the worldwide fame came to Metallica. Their next albums were sold in millions of copies, their songs were toping the charts in many countries, the summit was conquered. Metallica now is the leading metal band no one can compete with.
