When somebody thinks of a southern rock band then the band that comes to mind is Lynyrd Skynyrd. That bluesy rock music and the guitar based band is still considered an influential band. Some school going young guys got together with a view to forming a band in 1965. The initial lineup of the band includes Ronnie Van Zant (vocalist/songwriter), Gary Rossington (guitarists), Allen Collins (guitarist), Larry Jungstrom (bassist) and Bob Burns (drummer). They played together for many years and they did not have any fixed name for their band. The previous names of the band were Sons Of Satan, Noble Five, Wildcats, My Backyard, etc). After the release of their first single in 1968, they changed the name to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The name was funny because the name s a mock against a man named Leonard Skinner (high school gym teacher). The bassist left the band and Leon Wilkeson joined as a bassist. Soon the band could sign to “Sounds Of The South label” of Atlanta. When they were getting prepared for their next album, another guitarist was recruited in the band which created a triple guitar attack.
Their album, “Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd” was considered hit in the market. And the album sold really well. As a new band it proved to be perfet. The band members tried many things to expose the band to the public. The Who's Quadrophenia tour also helped the band to expose very well. The band performed a tribute to the recently deceased Duane Allman,"Free Bird,” The song was accepted by all. "Sweet Home Alabama “was a single by the band which appeared in their second album called “Second Helping” in 1974.
After the release of the second album, Burnds left the band and Artimus Pyle joined as the new drummer. Later they concentrated in the studio work and produced numerous albums including “Nuthin' Fancy” in 1975 “Gimmie Back My Bullets”, “One More For the Road” and there were other releases and singles.
Once, the band members were on plane, on their way to a show. But unfortunately the plane crashed, killing Gaines, his sister Cassie (back singer), Van Zant, and the manager Dean Kilpatrick. And other members were injured very seriously. The band disbanded soon after this accident.
In 1987 Lynyrd Skynyrd arranged a reunion where they performed together.
