Ludivico Einaudi is an Italian pianist and composer. Now he is one of the most meaningful and respected persons on the modern European stage. Einaudi’s music is a vibrant fusion of classical traditions and modern sound. Speaking about his childhood, Einaudi claims that his becoming a musician was predetermined. «When I was a child, my mother used to play piano a lot and my seldom seen father was my conductor. I was playing with my mother from the age of five, and this is how I got my first education». Ludivico Einaudi was born in 1955 in Torino. He graduated from the Milan Conservatory named after Juseppe Verdi and later continued studying from an Italian composer Luciano Berio.
When his Stanze album was released, a funny accident happened. In 1990, BBC played a few of Einaudi’s compositions and this caused a telephone collapse: many of the listeners rushed to their phones to ask their friends whose music is playing.
But real success came with the album Le Onde («Waves»). This was a cycle of piano ballads in that minimalistic style by which we recognize Einaudi now. The album was warmly met by both audience and critics. From that time on, Ludovico Einaudi was getting invitations to make movie soundtracks. Nanni Moretti, a famous Italian director, picked a few compositions for his Aprile. The composer collaborated with a number of other directors and got a few Grammies for his soundtracks.
1999 brings Eden Roc which is an example of deep study of instrumental canzone. Although the instruments are classical, Einaudi’s music can not be called classical also. It is full of other elements and traditions, for example, folk. «When I make up my music, I think about connection with the nature and imagine the underground world where an uncontrollable creature lives» – says Einaudi. After visiting Mali, the land of folk story tellers and authentic melodies, he created his I Giorni and Diario Mali.
From 2003, Ludovico Einaudi’s concerts are always fully packed. His latest albums are deeply loved by his fans and his compositions are played at concerts in Italy, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany. India, USA, Japan, Russia. He once said that after visiting Russia, he got an idea of a very complicated and tight melody, romantic and self-concerned at the same time.
