About Jimmy Eat World

In early 90s the alternative stage was ruled by grunge with its greasy shoulder-long hair, sullen glances and torn jeans. The era of boring post-punk was over, but the new wave of more positive punk-rock hasn’t yet started. In this controversial times, particularly in 1994, Jimmy Eat World was formed. Herd to believe, but at that time, nothing was promising that great success that would fall on the group 4 years later. The beginning was quite ordinary. The four kindergarten friends from a small town of Mesa, Arizona, once decided to give up club-and-bar lifestyle for something more perspective that could possibly give profit in distant future. The friends were Jim Adkins, Zach Lind, Tom Linton and Mitch Porter. They saved some money to buy cheap instruments and started to make up a loud name for their new band. It became a short inscription under one of Linton’s younger brother’s drawings. There was their third brother Jimmy eating a planet in it. The members agreed that Jimmy Eat World would be the perfect name for them.

In was February 1994, and a young band needed to create something to draw attention of fans and producers. So they started to rock the local scene with powerful and daring pink-sound. Jimmy Eat World concerts while touring the neighboring cities helped them gain more and more fans. Soon the group was noticed by an independent label Wooden Blue Records from Tempe. There, the band released their first quite mediocre LP and a few splits with other bands. Nevertheless, the albums were selling well and the long play was the bestseller. It hasn’t been reissued yet so now its considered as a rarity. The CDs were listened by someone from Capitol Records with was followed by immediate contract signing by both sides. Thus, in 1995, a new page in Jimmy Eat World history started.

The same year, Mitch Porter leaf the band for an unknown reason, and his place was taken by Linton’s school friend Rick Brutch. Soon all together they had their first major release – Static Prevails.

The album was not anything special, and the critics didn’t praise it much, but it showed that a punk band can create different sound from punk-rock and grunge to slow rock ballads more resembling the U2 songs. Later, in 1998, they released an extended play and one more long play in 1999.

The real and loud success came with their Bleed American. After the album came out, the band became popular in the world. They started touring in US and Europe alone and with other bands. In 2004, Jimmy Eat World present their fifth album which is more emotional with darker lyrics. The topics arisen are despair, drugs, politics. While the music is still diverse with acoustic guitar, piano and electronics.
