About Far East Movement

Far East Movement (or FM) is an American boy band that originated from Los Angeles, California in 2003. The band is composed of four members namely Kevin Nishimura (Kev Nish), James Roh (Prohgress), Jae Choung (J-Splif) and Virman Coquia (DJ Virman). With their hit single “Like a G6”, the band is considered the first group with mix Asian-American members to reach the number one spot in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 List.

The Beginning of a Movement

Growing up together and sharing their love for music, Kev Nish, Prohgress and J-Splif originally started a band called Emcees Anonymous and started playing in live performances in small clubs in Los Angeles. Later, they replaced the band’s name to Far East Movement, name after one of their own songs.

In 2006, the band released their first album entitled Folk Music which includes their first hit single “Round Round”, becoming one of the featured singles in the Hollywood action film The Fast and the Furios: Tokyo Drift. “Round Round” was a big success for the early career of the group that led the band pursuing a full-time musical career.

The Coming of the Fourth Mover

DJ Virman came as the band’s official DJ in 2008. Soon after his arrival to the group, they released their second album Animal which contained the songs “You’ve Got a Friend”, “Lowridin” and “Girls on the Dance Floor”. The hit single “Girls on the Dance Floor” was featured on notable television shows including in the 4th Season of America’s Best Dance Crew, So You Think You Can Dance and Get Him to the Geek.

In July 2009, the group had their first solo concert in Hollywood which proved to be a success after tickets became sold out quickly. After this, the group, together with fellow performers Quest Crew, Jay Park, Poreotics and others, performed in sold-out concerts in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The concerts were organized to support and encourage Asian-American artists.

Moving Forward

In October 2010, the quartet released their next album entitled Free Wired, under Cherrytree Records. The album included collaborations with other artists like Snoop DoggColette Carr and Natalia Kills. Following the release, “Like a G6”, one of the singles in Free Wired, achieved the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100.  Dirty Bass, the fourth album of FM was released in 2012 with their carrier single “Live My Life” featuring Justin Bieber. Among the latest singles released by the group include “Lovetron” (2013) and “Bang it to the Curb” (2014).
