Dubstep is defined as a type of dance music done electronically which originated in London, England during late 90’s.
The earliest Dubstep was released in 1998 which featured B-sides of two step garage single releases. The tracks gave less focus in using vocals. In 2001 the music began to be presented at London’s night club.
The term “dubstep” in 2002 has been used to tell the style of music on that year. It was done by record labels including“Tempa”, “Soulja”, “Road”, “Vehicle”, “Shelflife”, “Texture”,
“Lifestyle” and “Bingo”.
DJ John Peel from “BBC Radio 1” was a promoter of the sound. He started playing the sound in 2003. The listeners of his show voted “Distance”, “Digital Mystikz” and “Plastician” in 2004.
Dubstep began to be known in late 2005 and early 2006. Many website included the genre on internet and at the same time it also received large coverage in music magazine such as “The Wire” and online notificaations such as in “Pitchfork Media”. In January 2006, DJ Mary Anne Hobbs started to champion the genre.
Artists like Britney Spears used Dubstep sounds. Its influence was identified in the song “Freakshow” as well as to the 2007 album “Blackout”. “
By the start of 2010, Dubstep began to become more popular in UK, having more singles and remixes that included the music charts. It was evident with the hit “I Need Air” by “Magnetic Man” that it reached number ten in the “UK Singles Chart”. Its influence was noticed by critics and music journalists. Also, producers started to mix components of original Dubstep with other influences and eventually became popular in the United States as well.
Dubstep became well known to UK listeners. This was evident to “Katy On a Mission” which was ranked number five in the “UK Singles Chart”. BY 2011 “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” reached number three in the US billboard, “No More Idols” reached number two in the UK Album Chart”, “Guilt” reached number eight in the “UK singles chart”, “I Knew You Were Trouble” (Taylor Swift) which was voted number one on “US Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart”.
In the beginning 2011, the word “post-dubstep” was used for urban music influenced by the characteristics of Dubstep.
One of the most distinguishing characteristics of the Dubstep is the freedom to move away from a set of song structure. Most of dubstep is created for the dance floor and produced to be heard on a loud sound system.
Some of the best Dubstep artists and bands are Flux Pavilion, Zomboy, Skrillex, Bassnectar, Modestep, Datsik, Excision, Zeds Dead, Doctor P, 12th Planet, Dirtyphonics, Black Sun Empire, Peter Robinson, Nero and Rob Swire.
