In 1977, this rock band was formed by vocalist and guitarist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, drummer Pick Withers, guitarist David Knopfler and Ed Bicknell. The name of the band was such because most of the members of the band were broke when they got together. Dire Straits started its music when punk rock, rock and roll and blues music flourished. So, in spite of all the controversies regarding their type of music, the band went on and became internationally successful.
The first, self titled album was released in 1978. The band did not really have huge fan groups at that time. But, with the release of most admired 'Sultans of Swing', the band could see its ultimate success as this song become one of the top songs at that era. This song is still a magical song for so many music lovers as well as musicians. Soon after this they released their second album. “Making Movies” was the third album which in fact featured Roy Bittan. He was a great keyboardist who shared his musical knowledge with the band which could make them produce more experimental music.
In 1985 the band resealed ‘Brothers in Arms’ which clearly show their extreme musical experiments. ‘Money for Nothing’ became a hit song at that time. ‘Brothers in Arms’ was the band’s first album which was in fact digitally sold in a number of countries.
Around in 1980, Dire Straits become the top selling rock band. The band’s extreme popularity went beyond USA and UK. In 1991, it released its final album ‘On Every Street’.
With the passage of the time lineup of the band changed but Mark Knopfler was stable. He wrote most of the songs of his band and composed many well known tracts. Many people love his guitar playing style. He plays electric guitars without using any guitar picks.’ Sultans of Swing’ is the compositions which showed his skills over guitar. “Sultans of Swing’ was the best album of Dire Straits which will be remembered with the passage of time.
