About Birdy

An English singer-songwriter Jasmine van den Bogaerde also known as Birdy was born on May 15, 1994 in Hampshire, United Kingdom. Birdy learned to play piano when she was seven years old. She was taught by her mother who was a concert pianist. She was called Birdy by her parents, relatives and friends because she used to open her mouth like a bird when she was being fed. But her teachers called her Jasmine.

In 2008, Birdy joined and won in Open Mic UK. Since she was only twelve years old, she won the under eighteen category and won first place against ten thousand competitors. With two thousand people gathered to watch the contest, she sang “So Be Free”, her very own song.

A year later, 2011, she played live on BBC Radio3 in London. Then in January 2011, she released her cover song of “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver. The song reached the 17th in UK Singles Chart. The song was also chosen as “Record of the Week” in a UK radio with DJ Fearne Cotton. The music video of the song was released in May 2011 and was used in one of the episodes of “Vampire Diaries.” The song tops the charts in Netherlands. She also made a cover of the songs “Shelter” and “The A Team.” Her self-titled debut album of cover songs was released on November 2011. Within just a week of releasing the album, it topped the chart in Belgium, Australia and Netherlands; top 13 in UK; and top 40 in Ireland. She sold more than twenty-five thousand copies in Netherlands and fifteen thousand copies in Belgium.

In 2012, she performed live in “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in March. In August, her debut album was released in Australia reaching the top spot. She also has a song used as a soundtrack in the movie “The Hunger Games” entitled “Just A Game.” She also opened the ceremony in “the London Paralympic Games.” She also sang the song “Learn Me Right” in the movie “Brave” which she was nominated in Grammy Award.

In 2013, she sang in Italy’s Sanremo Music Festival in February. In June, she released her second album “Fire Within.” She sang three of the soundtrack of the movie “The Fault In Out Stars.” The songs are “Tee Shirt”, “Best Shot” and “Not About Angels.”

Most of her other songs were used in the series Vampire Diaries and in various movies.
