About Billy Talent

Billy Talent is a former band called Pezz, it is a Canadian rock band that was formed on 1993 in Mississauga, Ontario. The members are Benjamin Kowalewicz (lead vocalist), Arron Solowoniuk (drummer), Ian D’Sa (guitarist) and Jon Gallant (bassist). The band members met in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School and played under their former name Pezz. Their name was changed in the year 1999 due to crisis under the name Pezz. During their starting point, they recorded 4 demo tracks in Ian’s basement and it was called “Demoluca” and it followed by “Dudebox” that was out on January 1995.

In the year 1999, the band released the “Watoosh!” in which it is the only album they released under the name Pezz. It was released on July 23, 1999 that produced by Brad “Merlin” Nelson and it comprises on 17 tracks that includes the “New Orleans Is Sinking” by The Tragically Hop. In 2005, it was re-released through the Atlantic Records.

After the band changed their name, the opportunities came to them. They signed a recording contract with Atlantic Record along with Warner Music Canada. After one year, they released their first self-titled album called “Billy Talent” on September 16, 2003 through Atlantic Records ad produced by Gavin “Golden” Brown. It is their stepping stone on success after their former name. It contains 12 tracks with the singles “Try Honesty” along with “The Ex” and “River Below” that became the album as Certified 3x Platinum in Canada. Aside from that, they received a nomination in 2004 Juno Awards as Best Rock Album.

After the successful of their album, they made a Version II of the “Billy Talent” that was out on June 27, 2006 that peaked at number 1 in German Albums Chart as well as in Canada that sold 48, 000 copies on its first week while number 134 in US Billboard 200. They performed on BBC Radio 1’s on Mike Davies live session and also in Late Night with Conan O’Brien Show. Another, they produced a Version III of the Billy Talent in the year 2009 and they launched “Dead Silence” on the year 2012.

All in all, the band received 21 awards including the Best New Comer International in ECHO Awards, Best New Group of the Year in JUNO Awards and Best Rock Video in MuchMusic Video Awards. They got 56 nominations as they performed and tour around the world, they played in Rock am Ring along with Nova Rock Festival and Download Festival. According to the band, they will release their compilation album that contains their greatest hits.
