As a teenager, the soloist began playing different instruments settling on the slide guitar. Playing locally, he began to grow as a musician and decided to create an EP titled “Pleasure and Pain”. In 1993, he gave his demo to record labels leading to a deal with Virgin Records. One year later, Harper released his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World. The record did not do well in the US; yet, Harper was invited to play a festival in France. After he returned home from Europe, he began work on his follow-up album, Fight For Your Mind. This record became popular in college dorm rooms, garnering Harper a cult following that grows every year. In Europe, his popularity continued to increase as he climbed the charts.
In 1999, after releasing Burn to Shine, Harper met Jack Johnson and introduced the singer to Virgin Records. After Johnson signed with the label, he and Johnson toured together, often performing duets. The duo continues to perform together at random festivals. Five years later, Harper performed at the Vote for Change concert. He continued his humanitarian efforts by recording the song “Oppression” for jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi. In 2006, he dropped his next album, Both sides of the Gun. The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard charts and received commercial and critical acclaim. After the release, Harper returned to France, where he was named Artist of the Year in 2003 to record his next album. In 2007, Harper dropped Lifeline immediately after his European tour. His success continued throughout his 2012 release of By My Side. The album garnered immediate mainstream success, thanks in part to hit single “Diamonds on the Inside.” The Soloist has performed with notable musicians around the world including; Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks and Jack Johnson.
