About ABBA

ABBA is a Swedish pop group that was formed in 1972. The group was composed of Benny Anderson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus. The name is derived from the first name of the parts of the group, A for Agnetha, B for Benny, B for Bjorn and A for Anni-Frid. Their logo isᗅᗺᗷᗅ. Anderson was a former member of “Hep Stars”, a Swedish pop rock group. The group claimed to be the Swedish version of The Beatles. He was the keyboardist of the group. He also write remarkable hit making songs for the group like “No Response”, “Sunny Girl”, “Consolation” and “Wedding”.

Ulvaeus was a part of “The Hootenanny Singers”. He sings and played guitar. His group and Andersson’s group got acquainted in some concerts they performed in. In 1966, both Ulvaeus and Anderson collaborated to write a song. The song was entitled “Isn’t It Easy to Say”. Stig Anderson, encourage both artist to continue writing songs together and that they have a great potential. They wrote the songs “Sweet Sixties” and “Speleman”. Anderson met his future wife, Anni-Frid Lynstad, in the Eurovision Song Contest. They became couples just a month after meeting each other. As each of their group disbanded in 1969, Anderson and Ulvaeus decided to create their own group. In 1970, they produced their debut album entitled “Lycka” or “Happiness”. Their original composition was included in the album. Their wives was very supportive of their career, the women even contributed back-up vocals in their songs.

Faltskog sent a demo of their band to Karl Gerhard Lundkvist. Faltskog had shown her potential in becoming an artist. She went to Stockholm to record two of her own songs. She later met Ulvaeus in a Swedish TV shooting. Three years later they get married. Lyngstad was a former member of the band “Anni-Frid Four”. She also worked in a jazz oriented cabaret. She won in a national talent contest. Her award was working with EMI Sweden for a “recording contract” and to present live in TV.

In 1970, the couples went out on a holiday vacation together in an island in Cyrus. They started a jam and eventually ended up performing with UN soldiers as their audience. Their potential in foreign market was seen when they released their song “She’s My Kind of Girl” in Japan. They officially launched an album as a group with their wives in 1972.
