Vancouver Canucks is an National Hockey League club playing in the Pacific division if the Western conference. The club was formed in 1970 in British Columbia. On October, 9 of the same year, they had their first match against the Los Angeles Kings and lost with 1:3. But only two days later, the new team won Toronto 5:3 and opened their count of wins in the NHL.
The first years at the top of North American hockey did not bring much success to the team. The Canucks changed their trainers and main players too often. Finally, in 1982, led by Roger Nelson (after the team’s main trainer Garry Neal was disqualified by the League for 10 games after a fight with fans in Quebec), Canucks reached to the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, they couldn’t beat the golden lineup of the New York Islanders.
Vancouver Canucks couldn’t develop their success in the next few years. In the season 1987-88, the team even was the last in the regular championship. Nevertheless it gave them the right for the draft choice, and the team management chose Trevor Lynden. The club’s business went better after the Soviet players Igor Larionov, Vladimir Krutov and Pavel Bure joined in the early 1990-s. Led by Pat Quinn, the Canucks started to show more of an entertaining game, and Bure became one of the most productive forwards of NHL. Thanks to his goals, together with trustworthy playing of Kirk Macklynn and the leadership of captain Lynden, the Canucks reached the Stanley Cup in 1994 and the mighty New York Rangers had to play seven matches to tip the scales onto their side.
In the neat seasons, the Vancouver Canucks were aimed to do everything possible to win. That is why they hired Alexander Mogilny in 1995 and Mark Messier in 1997. Sadly, the font of Bure-Mogilny did not play as well as it was expected due to Bure’s injury mainly, while Messier’s best years were over. In the beginning of 1997-98 season, Pat Quinn was fired. In the end of the same season, following Pavel Bure’s request, the Canucks changed him to Florida. Vancouver again faced the numerous changes of leaders becoming an outsider again.
Canucks of the mid 2000-s was associated mostly with the Swedish Markus Nesulend and Canadian Todd Bertuzzi. But the rise to the top of the new league became when the Swedish brothers Sedin and Roberto Luongo joined the club. In 2010-11 the Vancouver Canucks won the regular NHL championship for the first time. They also reached the final in the play-off and lost the seventh game to Boston. The fans were not happy with it: after the match, there was a violence outbreak in Vancouver.
